George Allen, an incumbent senator from Virginia, lost his 2006 re-election by a razor-thin margin after making controversial remarks on the stump which were interpreted by the press as racially prejudiced. He was calling out an opponent’s operative who was at the speech, made an off the cuff remark, and it reversed his momentum. He had a bad day for sure, and would love to have that one back; it cost him an almost certain re-election.

Harry Reid, US Senate Majority leader, made equally boneheaded remarks, not on the stump in a boneheaded moment, but in a new book. Like most books, it was probably revised and reviewed extensively prior to publishing. The Times ran a story on Reid’s apology, and my comment was highlighted as an editor’s choice. Here is what I wrote:

Yet again, a Democrat makes an incredibly dumb statement (in a book, not off the cuff on the stump, no less), and I see their supporters getting tribal. Reid’s supporters defend his honesty, yet whatever truths in his remarks serve only to remind us that we are in anything but a post racial society. Had a Republican senator written this in a book he’d be drawn and quartered by the media, and perhaps rightly so.

Reid should be judged by the same standards as anyone else, conservative or not, who would write and publish such stupid words. I am tired of the political wagons getting circled every time a politician reveals what a troglodyte he or she is.

Senator Reid should step down as majority leader at the very least. This is now out there forever.

How the editor missed that is beyond me. If Reid isn’t a bigot, he certainly is a dope.

With Friends Like This…

A woman has pleaded guilty to assisting in the rape of her college friend.

A Dobbs Ferry woman admitted yesterday that she helped her boyfriend sexually abuse a friend of hers by secretly drugging her.

Jessica Jacobson, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse in Westchester County Court in White Plains. She could have faced up to seven years in state prison, but was promised a three-year prison term by county Judge Gerald Loehr, who scheduled sentencing for May 5.

Authorities contend that Kevin Nowell, a married Ossining man who was dating Jacobson, wanted her to arrange a threesome. Jacobson invited her 23-year-old friend to her apartment Aug. 27 for Nowell to have sex with her and slipped Ecstasy into her drink.

The victim became weak from the mixture of the drug and alcohol and Nowell, 42, raped and sodomized her, authorities said. She left to get treated at a hospital after waking up and then contacted police.

The victim, from New Jersey, had been friends with Jacobson since college.

Her defense attorney came out with a great line after court:

"She’s extremely remorseful over what occurred," defense lawyer Arthur Del Negro said afterward.

This was the result of a plea deal, so there must be some leniency involved. That said, this is a woman who truly deserves to have Carolyn Hansen post a sign on her front door for all to see. It goes without saying that rapist Kevin Nowell, who is from my town, is a monster. I cannot fathom how a woman could do this to another woman. Had she been plotting this for years because of something the victim did to her back in college?

This woman should have checked her sources.
A woman in Benton County hung a sign on a neighbor’s door warning people that the man who lived there was a sex offender.

But there were two problems: she had the wrong house, and even if she had the right house, police say sex offender notifications can’t be used to harass released convicts.

”Don’t play here. Child molester lives here,” the sign said, according to a police report.

Her daughter was her source of information. She didn’t bother to check with the authorities, the state sex offender registry, or an adult. The innocent victim, a better man than I would be about this, declined to press charges.

Rebecca Beach, 19, a student at Warren County Community College got an email from her professor, John Daly, filled with leftist kool aid vitriol, complete with grammatical errors. He was responding to her announcement of the speaking engagement of returning Iraq war veteran Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, which he evidently didn’t approve of. Among the jewels of wisdom he wrote was the following sentiment:
Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors.
The student was interviewed on WABC-Am this morning by John Gambling. I heard Gambling mention that the professor resigned before he could be sacked. Aside from his moonbat politics, it takes a special kind of man to bully a 19 year old student. Here is the full text of the email cut and pasted so you can see what a swell guy Professor Daly is.

Dear Rebecca:

I am asking my students to boycott your event. I am also going to ask
others to boycott it. Your literature and signs in the entrance lobby look
like fascist propaganda and is extremely offensive. Your main poster
"Communism killed 100,000,000" is not only untrue, but ignores the fact that CAPITALISM has killed many more and the evidence for that can be seen in the daily news papers.

The U.S. government can fly to dominate the people of Iraq in 12 hours, yet it took them five days to assist the people devastated by huricane Katrina. Racism and profits were key to their priorities. Exxon, by the way, made $9 Billion in profits this last quarter — their highest proft margin ever. Thanks to the students of WCCC and other poor and working class people who are recruited to fight and die for EXXON and other corporations who earning megaprofits from their imperialist plunders. If you want to count the number of deaths based on political systems, you can begin with the more than a million children who have died in Iraq from U.S.-imposed sanctions and war.

Or the million African American people who died from lack of access to
healthcare in the US over the last 10 years.
I will continue to expose your right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like your won’t dare show their face on a college campus. Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors and fight for just causes and for people’s needs — such freedom fighters can be counted throughout American history and they certainly will be counted again.

Prof. John Daly

I am sure everyone at WCC is very proud of this exceptional (former) faculty member. What a mensch.

Noam Chomsky: Capitalist

Ironic. Tech Central ran this article on noted anti-capitalist Noam Chomsky’s business practices, his substantial holdings and the lengths he has gone to set up his estate. Just like any other millionaire.

Chomsky, for all of his moral dudgeon against American corporations, finds that they make a pretty good investment. When he made investment decisions for his retirement plan at MIT, he chose not to go with a money market fund, or even a government bond fund. Instead, he threw the money into blue chips and invested in the TIAA-CREF stock fund. A look at the stock fund portfolio quickly reveals that it invests in all sorts of businesses that Chomsky says he finds abhorrent: oil companies, military contractors, pharmaceuticals, you name it.

When I asked Chomsky about his investment portfolio he reverted to a "what else can I do" defense: "Should I live in a cabin in

?" he asked. It was a clever rhetorical dodge. Chomsky was declaring that there is simply no way to avoid getting involved in the stock market short of complete withdrawal from the capitalist system. He certainly knows better. There are many alternative funds these days that allow you to invest your money in "green" or "socially responsible" enterprises. They just don’t yield the maximum available return.

Check out the hole thing and you’ll see (if you don’t know it already) what a flaming hypocrite the man is.

…NOT. Hence the name of my blog. My blue neighbors can be downright scary.
With oil producers using their position to bleed every buck they can from the people of the United States, it would appear to me that they have moved up to the position of No. 1 terrorist. I’m sure you could find millions who would agree with me — all those SUV owners,
No doubt another member of the "reality based" community, right? Are the guys who get $6 a beer at Yankee Stadium terrorists too? How dumbed down can a term get?
